Sashiko (刺し子), which can be translated as “small stitches”, is a traditional Japanese decorative and functional embroidery technique, originally developed as a way of reinforcing fabrics and extending their useful life. Born in rural Japan, Sashiko has crossed the centuries to be rediscovered in contemporary embroidery.

It gained popularity because of its soothing effect and the symmetry of its shapes. It comes in regular geometric designs, sewn by hand with a basting stitch, with the thread entering and exiting at regular intervals. The needle is usually passed through in one go, with a continuous movement, before the thread is pulled through. It therefore requires a longer needle with a sturdy structure.

If you haven’t yet immersed yourself in this Japanese experience, here’s your chance. Also take a look at the complete guide “Sashiko 365” by Susan Briscoe, available in our books.

Set of 8 needles in sizes 3 to 5.
